Mr. Clement Twumasi

Congratulations to Mr. Clement Twumasi of Department of Mathematics, University of Ghana for winning the Best Graduate Student Research Award in Mathematics. The research award ceremony was held on 12th July 2018 at the University of Cape Coast as a partnership between Research and Grant Institute of Ghana (REGIG) and Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG).

Mr. Twumasi modelled HIV, Tuberculosis and hepatitis B transmission in Ghana using a classification tree model, specifically Markov Chain.

The findings would help policy makers ascertain the most infectious disease so as to ensure the proper prioritization of limited resources in the prevention and management of infectious disease in Ghana. Furthermore, the study added to knowledge by statistically helping to establish the joint relationships among HIV, Tuberculosis and Hepatitis B prevalence using Bayesian networks or directed graphical model.

Mr Twumasi is optimistic that Markov chain model, which is robust to statistical assumptions compared with logistic regression and other models commonly used in healthcare research, can be used to estimate other relevant epidemiological quantities of infectious diseases as well as generalize the transition probabilities for future predictions.

The study is directly relevant to the attainment of SDG 3 (Good health and wellbeing).

The REGIG is an independent, not-for profit organization dedicated to promoting the generation, dissemination, and utilization of research to facilitate the socioeconomic development of Ghana and to contribute to global scientific discourse.
